Earlier, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first in a dew-soaked Eden Gardens. While he wanted to put the batting line-up through the grind and bowlers to defend the total, he succeeded in that.
Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided India with a great platform posting 69 for the first wicket. But once Ishan Kishan departed, India lost two wickets in quick succession. Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant failed with scores of 0 and 4. But Rohit continued to shoulder on India’s innings hammering 26th T20I half-century and departed after a fantastic one-handed catch by Ish Sodhi.

However, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer kept the scorecard ticking with 25 off 20 and 20 off 15 respectively. After the two were dismissed, Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar played late cameos of 18 off 11 and 21 off 8 to India to 184/7.
New Zealand were off to a good start with Martin Guptill bringing up 21 in two overs. But they soon lost the momentum when Daryl Micthell departed in the third over. Axar Patel was the architect, taking two wickets in the over as New Zealand’s struggle began. While Guptill slammed a half-century, New Zealand kept on losing wickets as Kiwis suffered a huge 73-run loss.

Axar Patel returned with 3/9 while Harshal Patel bagged 2/26. Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal scalped a wicket each.

The win meant, India became the first team to clean sweep New Zealand at home and away. India won the T20 series in 2020 5-0 in New Zealand.
