England could break 45-year-old record –
As things stand, the highest run successful chase against India came in 1977 by Australia at WACA in Perth. The Aussies chased down 339-run target in the Test match to set the record, and since then it has stood for 45 years. If England are successful in chasing the 368-run target on Day 5 of the Edgbaston Test, they will surpass their Ashes rivals in those regards.
The next highest successful run chase against India was in 1987 as West Indies scored 276 runs at then Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. South Africa’s run chase of 240 runs at the start of the year in Johannesburg is the third highest run chase against India.

As things stand, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have put together an unbeaten partnership of 150 runs. The pair has taken England in pole position to secure the win, with 119 runs needed to win the match. If England do manage to get to the target it will be a remarkable achievement for them.
A win at Edgbaston will also ensure they will level the five-match Test series at 2-2. Currently they are trailing 1-2 and need a win to bolster their chances of salvaging something form the series. Astonishingly, it will also be their fourth consecutive Test win having beaten New Zealand 3-0.

Record Run Chase at Edgbaston on cards-
While the record run chase against India is on the cards, England can write history on multiple fronts. If England manage to chase down the total, it will also be the highest successful run chase at Edgbaston. The previous best was 281 runs managed by South Africa against England in 2008.
England’s best run chase at the venue was in 1999 against New Zealand, when they scored 208. If Root and Bairstow do manage to chase the total it will be a perfect English summer for them, having already beaten World Test Championship (WTC) winners New Zealand and now India.
