‘Have to go for a scan’: Venkatesh Iyer opens up on back niggle

Venkatesh Iyer looked in full flow during his knock against RCB. However, he caught a niggle on his back while playing a pull shot off Alzarri Joesph's bowling.

Venkatesh Iyer’s valiant knock of 50 from just 30 balls steered the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a thrilling victory despite him picking up a back niggle during his innings. The left-hander’s knock was laced with power, including a six that seemed to cause him some discomfort.

The incident occurred in the 11th over, bowled by Alzarri Jospeh, when Iyer went for a big pull shot that cleared the ropes. However, he appeared to twist his upper body awkwardly while executing the stroke. The physiotherapist also rushed onto the field to check on him, but the 29-year-old signaled he would continue.

Venkatesh battled through and continued to find the boundary with ease. His knock of 30-ball 50 proved to be the match-winner. After the game, he acknowledged the niggle. “My back is a little jacked up,” he admitted to commentators. “I’ll have to go for a scan and see the extent of the damage.”

KKR breaks the ‘home team winning’ streak

After a wait of ten games in IPL 2024, the Kolkata Knight Riders have finally broken the trend of only home sides winning matches in the ongoing tournament.

Before the RCB vs KKR showdown, all nine games saw hosts clinch respective games. However, with their impressive 7-wicket triumph, KKR have become the first visiting team to win an IPL 2024 game.
