Had belief we could chase down: Ben Stokes not heartbroken despite loss in IND vs ENG 2nd Test

England went for the kill on Day 4 with quick runs but Bumrah and Ashwin kept chipping away with wickets as England were bowled out for 292 in 399-run chase.

Ahead of the showdown day in IND vs ENG 2nd Test, James Anderson played mind games, saying England could go for it even if the target was 600. And that was the belief Ben Stokes had too. However, England Cricket Team ended up on the losing side chasing down 332 runs on Day 4 with 9 wickets in hand. Brilliance from Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin helped India bowl out England for 292. And even as the series is level at 1-1 ahead of the break, Stokes is not heartbroken.

“We had full belief in ourselves that we could chase that down. The way we have gone about taking on challenges like that is what we are about. In moments like that, when you have scoreboard pressure, that is when we get the best out of ourselves as individuals. The way we applied ourselves and put India under pressure was great, unfortunately we didn’t end up on the right side of the result,” England captain Ben Stokes said at the post-match presentation.

No suggestion on gameplan

While James Anderson did suggest that Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes wanted the batters to go for the kill, England skipper said, there was no such suggestions. Instead, there was scoreboard pressure and everybody knew about the task in hand.

“There is no suggestion on how to go out and play. We know there is a task ahead. We know there is 330 to get, everybody in that dressing room is a quality player,” Ben Stokes added.
