For the last few days, there has been a lot of chatter if KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir going to become the next India coach. Of course, there has been no clarity from the BCCI in this regard, but many have touted Gambhir as the frontrunner already. On Sunday, after KKR lifted the IPL 2024 trophy, it only became clearer that something could be brewing between him and the board.
Gambhir was seen having a hearty interaction with BCCI secretary Jay Shah, which only indicated, that at least the talks between the two parties could be ongoing. Whether or not Gambhir becomes Team India coach after Rahul Dravid becomes a separate issue.
Other Names Doing the Rounds For Team India Coach
The name of VVS Laxman, Ricky Ponting, Justing Langer, Stephen Fleming had come up too, but then as it turned out, there was no truth in it. In fact, as per a report in Dainik Jagran, even Gambhir is keen to take up the job. But the report also suggests that he wants a ‘selection guarantee’.

Gambhir Did Wonders with KKR
He of course had decent credentials as a mentor/coach. He was associated with the LSG, before moving to KKR. And for a team to win the trophy after finishing seventh in IPL 2023, is a major improvement. One of the most talked-about transformations was that of Sunil Narine, who was excellent with the bat and the ball. The all-rounder too credited Gambhir for his success. No wonder, he’s in demand.
