Forget the IPL drama b/w Rohit Sharma-Hardik Pandya: Irfan Pathan urges ‘dont talk about it’

With the IPL drama hopefully left behind, India sets its sights on the T20 World Cup. Their campaign begins against Ireland on June 5th in New York.

The recently concluded IPL 2024 season was marred by controversy surrounding the Mumbai Indians’ leadership change from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya. The team’s poor performance and reports of player dissatisfaction with Pandya’s captaincy fueled the fire.

No Room for IPL baggage with Team India

However, with the T20 World Cup approaching, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes there’s no place for the IPL drama in the national dressing room. He urges a clean slate approach to ESPNCricinfo:

“The conversation of the IPL shouldn’t be happening. Not even once… Just focus on what Rahul Dravid wants from a particular player.”

Irfan Pathan’s sentiment finds support in Australian batting legend Matthew Hayden. He emphasizes the importance of unspoken leadership and a unified front in a World Cup setting. “[Don’t even] talk about it,” Hayden echoes.

Celebrity culture vs Team focus

Irfan Pathan highlights a potential issue stemming from India’s “celebrity culture” within cricket. He suggests drawing inspiration from Australia’s team-oriented approach while acknowledging the unique passion of Indian fans.

“Australia doesn’t have a celebrity culture… Ideally I would want a nice balance… Sometimes having that kind of a culture doesn’t help us,” Pathan explains.
