England coach McCullum open to have separate captains for ODIs, T20Is after Champions Trophy debacle

England head coach McCullum said he is open to appointing separate captains for ODIs and T20Is after Jos Buttler's departure

England cricket team are on the hunt for a new captain following their Champions Trophy debacle. Jos Buttler announced his decision to step down as captain following a miserable campaign. Prior to the tournament, England suffered series defeats to India in both T20Is and ODIs. Now, head coach Brendon McCullum is exploring all options before a decision can be made. And he is willing to consider separate captains for T20Is and ODIs, if that should be the case.

England to have separate captains for ODIs and T20Is?

As per BBC, McCullum said he is okay with either having the same or different captains for the two white-ball formats. His remarks came after the side’s 7-wicket thrashing at the hands of South Africa in their last Champions Trophy 2025 game. McCullum said he would need a couple of weeks to explore the options and bring the team back on track.

If it’s the same person, great, if it’s two, that’s great too. Give me a couple of weeks to work it out and get this thing back on track,” McCullum said.

Ever since Buttler’s resignation, pundits in England are divided on who could be his successor. While some former cricketers pointed out that no player in the current team is good enough to take over the reigns, others have mulled the possibility of calling back players who aren’t part of the setup currently. When asked about the latter, McCullum did not rule the possibility out.

Give us a couple of weeks to work it all out, sort of digest what’s happened over the past month and a half, and then we will start to plot and plan our way forward from there,” he added.

Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook are some of the options within the team. From the outside, the alternatives include Sam Curran, Sam Billings and James Vince.
