Do or die situation for Shreyas Iyer in IND vs AUS 2nd ODI in Indore

Shreyas Iyer struggled with fitness and limited opportunities after returning to action. He aims to regain form in the IND vs AUS 2nd ODI ahead of the World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer is running out of time to accumulate runs before the upcoming ODI World Cup. He recently returned to cricketing action after a lengthy injury layoff but has only had the chance to bat in two matches since his return, failing to make an impact. In the opening IND vs AUS ODI in Mohali, he was run out for a mere 3 runs from 8 balls due to a mix-up with Shubman Gill. During the Asia Cup group game against Pakistan, he managed to score just 14 runs. He missed the Super 4 round and the final due to back spasms.

Shreyas Iyer in a “Do or Die” situation

Shreyas Iyer, who is typically India’s number 4 batter, has faced difficulties related to both fitness and opportunities during the Asia Cup. Back spasms kept him out of final stages of the continental tournament, and an unfortunate run-out in Mohali further worsen his challenges with just 8 balls at the crease. In preparation for the World Cup, he is now eagerly anticipating the upcoming IND vs AUS 2nd ODI, hoping to accumulate significant runs to boost his confidence and that of the team.

Despite Shreyas Iyer’s early dismissal in Mohali, India secured a five-wicket win while chasing a target of 277 runs. This success was largely attributed to impressive batting performances by Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav. Gaikwad contributed 71 runs from 77 balls, featuring 10 boundaries, while Gill notched up 74 runs from 63 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes. Additionally, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav both registered valuable half-centuries in the chase.

With senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli resting, the Men In Blue will be eager to secure a series-clinching win in the second ODI. This opportunity will allow them to fine-tune their strategies and combinations in preparation for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India’s first match in the World Cup will also be against Australia. The Indian management plans to experiment with the middle-order positions, an area that has posed significant challenges in recent ICC tournaments.
