Despite BCCI’s uncertainty of playing in Pakistan, PCB sends Champions Trophy schedule to ICC

The coming months will be crucial as the ICC and member boards, including the BCCI, discuss the feasibility of the proposed schedule and India's participation. Cricket fans around the world will be watching closely to see if the Champions Trophy returns to Pakistan after a long absence.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has submitted its proposed schedule for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy to the International Cricket Council (ICC), with an ambitious plan to host all matches, including those featuring India, within Pakistan.

PCB aims for Champions Trophy 2025 on Home Soil

The ninth edition of the Champions Trophy, featuring the top eight ODI teams, is scheduled for February and March 2025. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the submission of the schedule, expressing the board’s desire to host the entire tournament in Pakistan.

We want the complete Champions Trophy in Pakistan,” declared Naqvi. “We have already submitted the schedule to the ICC. The ICC security team came to Pakistan and they were very happy with the arrangements.”

Security Concerns and India’s Participation

A recent visit by the ICC security team resulted in positive feedback on Pakistan’s facilities and security measures, including stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. However, India’s participation remains a significant hurdle.

Strained political relations between India and Pakistan make it unlikely for the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to grant permission for the India cricket team to travel to Pakistan without government approval.

BCCI considers alternatives

BCCI sources as per Cricket Pakistan suggest alternative plans, including a “hybrid model” where some matches could be held outside of Pakistan. A complete venue change is also a possibility if India cannot participate under the proposed schedule.

PCB remains optimistic

Despite these challenges, the PCB remains optimistic about hosting the Champions Trophy entirely within Pakistan. Their comprehensive preparations and the positive feedback from the ICC security delegation demonstrate their commitment to a successful event.

The coming months will be crucial as the ICC and member boards, including the BCCI, discuss the feasibility of the proposed schedule and India’s participation. Cricket fans around the world will be watching closely to see if the Champions Trophy returns to Pakistan after a long absence.
