Virat Kohli has always had a special place in his heart for Test cricket. And after India claimed one of their best away wins at Edgbaston, the former captain didn’t waste any time in applauding the team for their feat. India had never won a Test match at the venue in 58 years, and a draw was their best result.
But Shubman Gill’s young team decided to write history against all odds. They were 0-1 down in the 5-match Test series after England chased down 371 at Headingley. Then, Jasprit Bumrah was confirmed to skip the game. On Day 1, India was 211/5 and in trouble.
But Shubman Gill stood up, scoring an incredible double hundred. His 269-run knock was the highest score for an India Test captain, breaking Kohli’s record. It was the highest score by an Indian batter in England as well. But that wasn’t it. Gill returned to score 161 runs in the second innings.
Kohli shows love after India’s historic win
But in the end, only Graham Gooch had scored more runs (456) than Gill (430) in a Test match. It was the first time India scored over 1000 runs in a Test. Taking over Kohli’s number four spot, the legend was the first one to applaud the newly appointed captain. But Kohli didn’t just show Gill his love. He heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, who claimed 17 of the 20 wickets in the match.
“Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch,” Kohli wrote on X.
