Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant is in the race to be named as India’s vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. As per Cricbuzz, Pant is in the fray for India’s vice-captaincy alongside Hardik Pandya. Earlier, BCCI had confirmed that Rohit Sharma would lead the Indian side in the marquee tournament while Pandya would be his deputy. If the reports turns out to be true, it could be a big U-turn made by the BCCI, moving on to Pant from Pandya.

The report of Rishabh Pant being a front-runner in the vice skipper race comes at a time when a contrasting report suggests that Sanju Samson would be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper over Pant. The 15-member squad is expected to be announced by the selectors on May 1.

“At this point in time, Rohit is an all-format captain. It is a collective decision, and the selectors are fully aligned on the matter. Hardik Pandya will retain his position as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Consider if Hardik gets injured, as he did in the previous World Cup. In such a scenario, who should we entrust with the leadership responsibility,” Jay Shah had said in February.
