The Big Bash League’s (BBL) India push looks like it’s actually happening now. Months after reports first emerged that Cricket Australia (CA) was exploring the possibility of staging a BBL match in India, the teams for the historic fixture have now reportedly been finalised.
According to Code Sports, defending champions Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades will face off in the opening match of BBL 2026-27 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12. The plans are reportedly locked in, but the event still needs a formal green light from Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association. If it gets approved, it’ll be the first time a Big Bash League game is played outside Australia.
Why Chennai and why these two teams?
The push to bring the BBL to India really comes down to one thing and it is to grow the audience. India is still the biggest cricket market in the world, and CA sees this as a chance to get the league in front of more Indian fans. After several trips by CA officials who inspected the venue earlier this year, Chennai has emerged as the frontrunner.
A TNCA source had previously confirmed that the BBL opener was being targeted for the second week of December, while Australian officials were also spotted in Chennai during IPL 2026.
Defending champions Perth Scorchers were always considered a likely participant. Earlier reports suggested that CA believed the Western Australian franchise would be well-suited to the concept because of Perth’s time zone and commercial interest from Indian investors.
The opponents have now reportedly been locked in as Melbourne Renegades, who have underperformed massively in recent seasons. The rivalry has been completely one-sided in recent years. Melbourne Renegades have not beaten Perth Scorchers since 2018 and have lost each of their last eight meetings against the franchise.

If there is one thing working in Melbourne’s favour, it might be the venue. Chepauk traditionally offers assistance to slower bowlers and spinners, conditions very different from the pace-friendly surfaces Perth are accustomed to in Australia. With stars such as Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh expected to feature, the Scorchers will start as favourites irrespective of where the game is played.
