The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is all set to host its first-ever Big Bash League game later on this year, in what will be a first for an iconic venue which has so far hosted IPL and other international games. Earlier in February, a report claimed that Cricket Australia was keen on exploring the lucrative Indian market and hence was willing to host the BBL 16 opener in Tamil Nadu’s capital. It looks like it is all but confirmed, with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association confirming it while CA are yet to do so.
BBL 2026/27 opener to be held in Chennai
As per reports, a TNCA source confirmed that the BBL 16 opener will be held at Chepauk in the second week of December. A report states that a five-member team from Cricket Australia conducted a recce of the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday as they also were in attendance for the CSK vs SRH, IPL 2026 match. The reports also claim that CA has recieved a positive response from the BCCI over the matter, even though the latter was not interested in the matter earlier.
However, a CA source told the publication that nothing has been confirmed yet, while the board is in talks with the BCCI and are exploring the option of hosting the game in Chennai as a part of efforts to boost the India-Australia relationship.
“We are not able to confirm anything. We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to drive the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI,” a CA representative said.
The report also states that BCCI president Mithun Manhas is in Chennai to meet the CA officials. As per SEN Cricket, two Cricket Australia officials had travelled to Chennai earlier in February to explore the possibility of the city hosting the BBL opener. The report claimed that Perth Scorchers could be one side which will play in Chennai, owing to the time zone and the willingness of the West Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to consider offers from some prominent Indian businessmen. The Big Bash League (BBL) usually takes place in the December-January window. The first game of the BBL 2025/26 edition was held on December 14 last year.
