‘Babar Azam alone is…’: PCB chief clarifies why Pakistan skipper has no deputy in T20 World Cup

Naqvi brushed aside the need for a vice-captain and backed Babar Azam and co. to win the trophy for Pakistan

Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi reckons Babar Azam is a force enough to lead the team and that he did not need a vice-captain. The PCB chief’s remarks come after the board decided to not name a vice-captain for the side that is bound to the USA for the T20 World Cup. Naqvi brushed aside the need for a vice-captain and backed Babar Azam and co. to win the trophy for Pakistan.

Why Babar Azam doesn’t need a vice captain?

“In my opinion, Babar Azam alone is more than sufficient. This team has the best combination and is highly capable,”  Naqvi said, as per Cricket Pakistan.

“The Pakistani team comprises excellent players with immense talent. I request everyone to cease the criticism. Post-mortems begin after losing just one match, which is not right. The boys are eagerly waiting for the nation’s support. I am confident this very team will win the World Cup,” Naqvi stated.

Earlier in Aptil, the PCB had denied reports that any player was offered the role of vice-captain before the T20 World Cup 2024 squad announcement. To avoid favoritism, the PCB and selectors have entrusted Gary Kirsten, the team’s white-ball head coach, with the decision-making power. If Babar Azam leaves the field or misses a match, Kirsten will have the authority to choose a deputy to lead the team.
