Arshdeep Singh edges out Bumrah, Travis Head & Babar Azam to be named ICC T20I Cricketer of 2024

Only four bowlers took more wickets than Arshdeep Singh in 2024, but none at a better strike rate than the left-arm pacer.

After being named in ICC’s Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2024, Arshdeep Singh has also been crowned the Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year. The left-arm pacer had become the India cricket team’s highest wicket-taker in the shortest format of the game just three days ago and has earned another laurel to start the year.

Having ended the T20 World Cup as the joint-highest wicket-taker, it was also on the cards that the left-arm pacer will be heavily featured in ICC’s year-end awards. Among full-member nations, he was the most successful bowler alongside Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.

Nearly half of Arsheep’s scalps (17 out of 36) came at the T20 World Cup, as he helped Team India win an ICC title after 11 years. Naturally, this tipped the scales in his favour over Hasaranga and the other three bowlers (Saudi Arabia’s Usman Najeeb – 38 wickets, UAE’s Junaid Siddique – 40 wickets, and Hong Kong’s Ehsan Khan – 46 wickets).

Other candidates for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year would have been Travis Head, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Hasaranga, and Babar Azam. All of them featured in the T20I team of 2024, but neither had the resume that Arshdeep has. Bumrah hasn’t played a lot, and Rohit Sharma has retired from the format.

Head isn’t even among the top 25 scorers. Babar has accumulated heaps of runs, but they have come at a slow pace. Hasaranga has taken the same number of scalps as Arshdeep, but a lot of them are against weaker teams. Therefore, Arshdeep was the apt player to be crowned as the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024.
