Are Harry Brook & Shubman Gill successors to Root & Kohli? England’s white-ball captain answers

Root and Kohli were 24 and 26 when the term Fab 4 was coined. 11 years later, Brook and Gill might be their successors.

One of the Fab 4 has already retired. Within the next couple of years, one can expect others to follow as well. The term itself remains exclusive to Joe Root, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe had grouped them as one in 2014, projecting they’ll be the future Test stars.

Brook and Gill, ready to take over?

Therefore, Fab 4 doesn’t exist beyond these greats. But as they took forward the legacy, someone will take the baton from them.

People are already calling for Shubman Gill to take over from Kohli. He’s already been named India’s Test captain and is the deputy in white-ball cricket as well. The same goes for Harry Brook. A Yorkshireman like Root, he was named England’s white-ball captain in April. Both are 26 and performed with the bat in the Headingley Test as well. Gill scored a hundred while Brook was dismissed for 99.

The world sees them as Fab 4 successors but do they? Well, Brook doesn’t. He praised Gill regarding his play but remained humble about himself, claiming all he wants is to play a lot more matches for England and then go up against him.

“(Smiles) Oh, God, no, I hadn’t even thought about that. He’s obviously a very good player and hopefully, I can play enough cricket for England to be playing against him plenty of times. Watching him last week, he’s very good, plays the ball late, and plays fast bowling very well. So hopefully we don’t see too much of that for the rest of this series. But yes, I’m sure hopefully we’ll play a lot of cricket against each other,” Brook told the Times of India.
