After Test reboot, England face white ball reboot 2.0 after World Cup 2023 debacle

England is currently staring at their 4th defeat in the World Cup 2023 after getting bundled out for 156 against Sri Lanka.

England cricket team was once again in shambles as they got bundled out for 156 against Sri Lanka in the ongoing World Cup 2023 match at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday. With defending champions staring at a humiliating exit from the World Cup 2023, a call for a white-ball “reset” has begun.

It seems, England need to return to the tried-and-true tactics they employed to rebound from the 2015 World Cup disaster. Notably, England were eliminated in the group stages of the World Cup after losing four out of their six games.

The Eoin Morgan along with the selectors made some tough calls to turn around team’s fortunes and it reaped rewards for the English side as they went on to lift the trophy in 2019.

The first tough call by the English Cricket Board (ECB) could be the sacking of white-ball skipper Jos Buttler, who has struggled to lead the side in the 50-over format.

Buttler was appointed as captain of the England ODI and T20I teams in June last year. He suffered a setback in his first series as captain, as England lost the series to India by 2-1 at home.

The last series that Buttler led was against South Africa in July which was tied. The wicketkeeper batter has captained the side in 15 matches so far, winning 8 of them. His tactics in the ongoing World Cup has been questioned and his poor form has also led to severe criticism.

The other change the team should be eyeing is the inclusion of young blood. The current England side is the oldest team in the tournament with average age being 31.8). Players like Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Joe Root will be well over 36 by the time next World Cup comes in 2027. It would be wise for the side to look for young options.

While, England can still turn it around in the World Cup 2023, it is evident that the Three Lions will have to make the second reset for another ODI World Cup success.
