Since the IPL’s inception in 2008, the league has grown rapidly and become the most-watched cricket league in the world. Over the years, several teams have consistently performed well, such as Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, all of whom have won the IPL trophy multiple times. On the other hand, teams like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals are still chasing their maiden IPL title.
Interestingly, new teams like the Gujarat Titans, who joined in 2022, made an instant impact by winning the championship in their debut season. However, there is another category of teams that were once part of the IPL but are now forgotten, as they no longer exist. These defunct teams once contributed to the league’s history but have faded away. Take a look at five teams that were once part of the IPL but no longer exist.
IPL teams that are defunct now
Team Name | Year Introduced | Year Defunct |
Deccan Chargers | 2008 | 2013 |
Kochi Tuskers Kerala | 2011 | 2012 |
Pune Warriors India | 2011 | 2013 |
Gujarat Lions | 2016 | 2017 |
Rising Pune Supergiant | 2016 | 2017 |
Deccan Chargers
The 2009 IPL champions, Deccan Chargers, who once featured legendary players like Adam Gilchrist, a young Rohit Sharma making his mark, and the aggressive Andrew Symonds, are now completely out of the IPL ecosystem. Their journey ended in 2013 due to internal issues with the BCCI.
Kochi Tuskers Kerala
Another team, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, joined the league in 2011 but could only enjoy the cash-rich atmosphere for one year. In 2012, the team was expelled due to disputes between the owners and their failure to pay the required bank guarantee fee ahead of the season.
Pune Warriors India
Then came Pune Warriors India, who brought in some of the biggest names, including former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh. However, like the others, their IPL journey was short-lived, lasting just three years. Financial issues with the BCCI led to their exit after the 2013 season.
Gujarat Lions
Moving on, two new teams were introduced in 2016, one of which was Gujarat Lions, to fill the void left by the temporary bans on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Lions participated for only two seasons (2016 and 2017) before being replaced when the CSK and Royals returned.
Rising Pune Supergiant
RPS made headlines for various reasons. In their debut season in 2016, under MS Dhoni’s leadership, the team finished in a disappointing seventh spot. However, the following year, Steve Smith took over the captaincy and led the team to the finals. Despite their improved performance, they narrowly lost to the Mumbai Indians.
