India Squad Asia Cup – Spin Heavy Squad for India: With conditions aiding spin, India have elected to go with a spin-heavy side for the multi-nation tournament. With Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal expected to be the first-choice spinners for the T20 World Cup, India have added the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi to the side to bolster their options.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi were both part of the side on the tour of West Indies and both impressed in the friendly conditions on offer. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel who were also part of the team have been left out but the latter has been named as standby.
Ashwin and Bishnoi both add variety to the Indian attack which is a bit one-dimensional with Chahal and Jadeja. Both turn the ball away from the right-hander and Ashwin and Bishnoi turn it into the right. While Bishnoi is a wrist spinner, the googly is his most potent weapon making him a handful against left-handed batsmen. Ashwin’s experience and versatility count in his favour and the veteran hasn’t put a foot wrong since making his comeback at the T20 World Cup last year.

Head coach Rahul Dravid is likely to opt for two spinners in the line-up during the Asia Cup with the conditions on offer. If fit, Ravindra Jadeja will dovetail bowling and batting in his role as a finisher at No.7. Chahal will likely be the first choice spinner in the Indian team while one of Ashwin or Bishnoi could add to the team’s arsenal. Ashwin’s growing confidence and ability with the bat make him a useful addition especially with India missing the services of Harshal Patel at No.8.
