Details about the suspension of contracts between Universal Studio Group and “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video studio and Seven Bucks have been made public by “The Hollywood Reporter”. According to the article, Universal Studio Group had conversations with production firms about providing services other than writing.

Universal Studio suspend deal with Dwayne Johnson

Universal Studio Group, a division of NBCUniversal, has taken an extreme action by suspending significant contracts, including those of well-known individuals like Lorne Michaels and Dwayne Johnson, as the writers’ strike in Hollywood enters its 20th week. Numerous high-profile projects are in limbo due to the ongoing labour conflict between the Writers Guild and Hollywood’s studios and streamers.

According to another report, “Universal Studio Group — which also includes Universal Television, Universal Content Productions, and Universal Pictures, among other divisions, — reached out to its remaining writing and producing partners Monday to see if they were comfortable with contributing non-writing services.”

The Hollywood Reporter also states:

“Sources also note that Universal Studio Group’s non-writing producers are among those who are impacted by the latest round of suspensions.”

“The pacts with Michaels (Saturday Night Live and a number of scripted TV shows) and Johnson (prolific in features and films) are among Universal’s most high-profile.”

Since WWE’s writers were not members of the guild, it was stated that they would not be impacted when the strikes began in May 2023.

The recent return of John Cena to WWE television was made possible by his availability as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
