Rohit’s India recently completed a whitewash against Sri Lanka, but despite their recent success, they are struggling at fourth position in the standings, owing to a 2-1 series defeat against South Africa in January. The road to the apex is gruelling and uphill, but the 34-year-old batter is planning to take one game at a time.

The long-term target is to reach the final of the WTC. But honestly, we cannot look that far ahead as it does not work like that. We need to look into the present, make sure that there are fewer steps to climb to reach that place. For us, reaching those small goals are very important,” he revealed after the series victory against Sri Lanka.

The newly-appointed Indian skipper acknowledged the adverse effect of the series defeat against South Africa, but also claimed that his team is on the right track. “Having lost the series in South Africa, it was critical for us to make an impact and get those crucial points for us. Hence, when it comes to the WTC table, there are a lot of points that we need to do right as a team. We pretty much achieved everything that we wanted as a team (from the Test series against Sri Lanka) and boxes got ticked. I think we are moving in the right direction,” the Nagpur-born cricketer elaborated.

How the WTC 2021-23 points table looks:

India are currently in the fourth position, having won six, drawn three and lost two matches. They have a PCT (percentage of points won out of a percentage of points contested) of 50.00.

Three teams are placed ahead of India in South Africa (placed third with PCT of 60.00), Pakistan (placed second with PCT of 61.11) and Australia (placed at the top with PCT of 71.42).

In a big boost to India’s advantage, both Pakistan and Australia played consecutive draws, considerably dropping their PCT, significantly reducing their lead as compared to India’s tally.
