In their last series against Netherlands at home, South Africa gave themselves a perfect chance to automatically qualify for the ICC World Cup this year. The Super League rankings now show the Proteas ahead of the West Indies and in eighth place overall after the series win. Still, Ireland’s ODIs against Bangladesh became the deciding factor in whether they would automatically qualify. If Ireland had won all three games in the series, they would have tied South Africa in points.

The bottom five teams in the Super League—Ireland, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands—will, however, have a second opportunity to secure a spot in the highly anticipated tournament when they take on five other Associate nations—the USA, UAE, Nepal, Oman, and Scotland—at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which gets underway on June 18 in Zimbabwe. Only two of the 10 teams competing in this event will advance.
Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, who finished last in the Super League table, will play in the Qualifier right away. The top three teams in League 2—Scotland, Oman, and Nepal—secured their spots in the World Cup Qualifier.
