- A few weeks short of her 41st birthday Serena has decided that it’s time to call it quits on her Tennis career. She is in pursuit of a record-equalling 24 Grand Slam titles that would tie her with Margaret Court.
- Serena was away from the sport for exactly a year since the Wimbledon last year as she suffered a hamstring injury after slipping on the grass courts during the first round.
- She too a year to recover and made her return to the courtsat the Eastbourne International this year where she partnered Ons Jabeur in Women’s Doubles.
- She then returned to singles at the Wimbledon but suffered a first round defeat in straight sets to unseeded Harmony Tan.
- The 41-year old then played at the Canadian Open and defeated Nuria Parrizas -Diaz in straight sets in the first round.
- However in the second round, she lost to 12th seed Belinda Bencic and couldn’t control her tears as she bid goodbye to the crowd.
- At the Cincinnati Masters, she faced reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu and lost the contest 4-6, 0-6 to bow out from the first round.
- She now hopes to end her career on a high with a deep run in the US Open.
- Meanwhile, 27year old Danka Kovinic started the year with a first round defeat at the Adelaide International 1.
- She then managed to reach the third round at the Australian Open and suffered straight set defeat to 14th seed Simona Halep.
- She also made it to the third round at Indian Wells Masters. She ended the hard court season with first -round defeat at Miami Open.
- She won an ITF title on clay before entering the French Open, where she managed to reach the third round. She bowed out after losing to World No.1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
- She was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon after a back injury. Her form ahead of the US Open is not great as she is yet to win a single match since her return from the injury.
Williams vs Kovinic Head-to-Head: Both the players are yet to face each other on the WTA Tour and their head-to-head record stands 0-0. Williams will be entering the contest as the favourite as Kovinis’s recent form has not been good. She needs to be at her best to topple an opponent like Serena Williams.
