- Nick Kyrgios who is well-known for his on-court antics has put in the hard work on his game this year and has yielded desired results as he improved his ranking considerably to enter the US Open as the 23rd seed.
- The Australian strated the year at his home Grand Slam tournament where he was ousted from the second round after losing to Daniil Medvedev in a four-setter. He however won the doubles title alomgside partner Kokkinakis.
- He then made it to the quarterfinal at Indian Wells Masters where he lost in a three-setter to Rafael Nadal. At the Miami Open, he lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner.
- He played only a solitary clay court tournament by participating in the US Clay court championships and reached the semifinal where he lost to Reilly Opelka in straight games.
- He took a break by missing the rest of the clay court tournaments and returned at teh start of the grass court season by making a semifinal appearance in both Stuttgart Open and Halle Open.
- At Mallorca Open he suffered an injury and withdrew from the second round contest against Roberto Bautista Agut.
- He however played at the Wimbledon and clinched an upset victory over fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round and went on to make it to the final. In the final he lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic.
- He won his maiden title this year at the Citi Open by defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the final.
- He then reached the quarterfinal at Canadian Open and just before the US Open he bowed out from the second round at Cincinnati Masters after losing to Taylor Fritz.
- Kokkinakis has shown good form this year as he started the year by reaching the semifinals at Adelaide International 1.
- He the followed it up by winning his maiden title this year at the Adelaide International 2 by defeating Arthur Rinderknech in the final.
- He bowed out from the first round at the Australian Ope, Delray Beach Open and Indian Wells Masters and his losing streak came to an end at Miami Open as he reached the fourth round in the tournament.
- He began the clay court season by losing in the qualifier at Italian Open but managed to reach the quarterfinal at Geneva Open. At the French Open he lost to Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round.
- He began the grass court season with a first round defeat at Surbiton Trophy, where he was the sixth seed.
- At the Wimbledon he was ousted from the second round by eventual champion Novak Djokovic who won the contest in straight games.
- After Wimbledon he bowed out from the first round at Atlanta Open, faced second round defeat at Los Cabos Open and crashed out from the first round at Cincinnati Masters and Winston-Salem Open. He will look to avoid a third successive first round defeat.
Kyrgios vs Kokkinakis Head-to-Head: This will be the first time both the compatriots will be facing each other in the singles. Kyrgios is one of the contenders for the title and he is entering the contest as the favourite. However having grown up together both the players know each other’s game thoroughly and it remains to be seen if Kokkinakis could spring a surprise by defeating Kyrgios in the opener.
