The 19-year-old Spaniard defeated fifth-seeded Norwegian Caper Ruud, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3, to earn his first major title and, with it, a debut as world No. 1.

After reaching the final behind a trilogy of five-setters, each ending late in the New York night, Alcaraz finished his marathon run with a 3-hour, 20-minute victory on Sunday night.
With 42 years of age between them—making for the youngest US Open final since Pete Sampras defeated Andre Agassi in 1990—both men thrilled the packed Ashe crowd with equal parts speed and athleticism, power and touch, baseline brilliance and frontcourt wizardry.
- The 19-year-old Alcaraz will become the youngest world No. 1 in the history of the ATP rankings since 1973. He will make the joint-biggest jump to the top spot. On Monday, he will rise three places from No. 4 to become the first teenager to reach the pinnacle of men’s tennis.
- Alcaraz improves to 3-0 in this budding rivalry, with their two 2022 meetings coming in big-stage finals in Miami and New York.
- Ruud was bidding to become the first Norwegian No. 1. Instead, he will rise from No. 7 to a new career-high of world No. 2.

Alcaraz beat Ruud Highlights: Playing for the title as well as the World No.1 both the players were engaged in an intense and absorping contest. However, it was the young Alcaraz who had the last laugh as he won the contest in four sets to rewrite Tennis history. At the dawn tomorrow, he will be the new World No.1 as he has dethroned Russian Daniil Medvedev from the top of the rankings. With the victory, Carlos Alcaraz has won his third straight match against Casper Ruud and improved his head-to-head record 3-0.
“It is something I have dreamt of since I was a kid. To be No. 1 in the world, to be champion of a Grand Slam, is something I have worked really, really hard [for],” Alcaraz said during the trophy ceremony. “It is tough to talk right now, I have lots of emotions. This is something I have tried to achieve. All the hard work I have done with my team and my family. I am just 19 years old, all the tough decisions have been with my parents and my team as well. It is something that is really special for me.”
Alcaraz won three consecutive five-set matches to reach his first Grand Slam final, spending 20 hours and 19 minutes on court. However, he showed little sign of tiredness to defeat Ruud.
“There is no time to be tired in the final rounds of a Grand Slam or in every tournament,” Alcaraz said. “You have to be ready and give everything you have inside. It is something I work really hard for.”
The 19-year-old has become the youngest Grand Slam champion since countryman Rafael Nadal, 19, lifted the trophy at Roland Garros in 2005, while he is the youngest US Open titlist since Pete Sampras, 19, in 1990.
