Furthermore, McGregor has been inactive since suffering an ankle break at UFC 264. Hence, it can be an easy fight for Gaethje, at least on the paper.

The BMF champion still doesn’t want to entertain a clash against Conor McGregor. While ‘Notorious’ called out Gaethje after the Colorado native knocked out Dustin Poirier at UFC 291. Justin Gaethje accused the Irishman of steroid cheating.

Justin Gaethje said, “I am not going to fight someone on steroids. I have never taken steroids in my life. Never will. I have never taken steroids and I don’t want to fight someone that’s cheating.”

Gaethje can earn the lightweight title shot next against the winner of Islam Makhachev vs Charles Oliveira 2 in UFC 294.

Meanwhile, McGregor can still make a comeback and face his TUF 31 opponent Michael Chandler. The exact date for McGregor’s return is unsure, but it looks likely to happen in late 2023 or early 2024.

Following McGregor’s defeat against Poirier in 2021, the Irishman had called for a potential fourth fight. He suffered the defeat via doctor stoppage and had wanted to finish off the rivalry with ‘Diamond’ on coming back.

Now that Dustin Poirier has also lost his chance to go near the lightweight title, a fourth clash between him and Conor McGregor makes sense for both parties involved.

Conor McGregor Can Still Chase Justin Gaethje

It is unclear whether McGregor vs Chandler would happen and if it does, the hosting weight category for the fight remains doubtful.

Conor McGregor looks extremely bulked up for 155 lbs at the moment. Upon returning, he is still the cash cow to make his own calls. It remains to be seen whom he actually chooses to fight on the comeback.
