After a first round where Volkanovski methodically pressured Rodriguez and controlled him on the ground, the champion dominated the second frame with vicious ground and pound and smothering top control.

Rodriguez attempted to get his striking game going at the top of the third round, but Volkanovski fired a right hand that caught the Mexican flush, followed by heavy punches and a slam that sapped whatever energy Rodriguez had left.

With the win, Volkanovski has the option to challenge lightweight champion Islam Makhachev to a rematch of their February bout that saw Volkanovski suffer his first loss in the UFC, or he can defend his 145-pound title. Regardless of his next move, Volkanovski’s victory at UFC 290 cements his status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Overall, UFC 290 was a night to remember for fight fans around the world, and Volkanovski’s successful defense of his featherweight title against Rodriguez was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening.
