UFC Celebrates Spectacular Submissions with Mid-Year Award

Alexa Grasso vs Valentina Shevchenko

The match was truly remarkable, with odds stacked against the former champion, Shevchenko, as the Mexican fighter dominated with a rear neck choke. At the UFC 285 event held at T-Mobile Arena on March 04, 2023, in Las Vegas, the challenger emerged victorious, clinching the championship title. Grasso capitalized on a tactical error made by Valentina Shevchenko in the fourth round, quickly seizing the opportunity to secure the rear-naked choke finish.

As Shevchenko missed a spinning back kick, Grasso promptly climbed onto her back and went for the choke, expertly getting her hooks in, flattening her out, and finally eliciting the tap. It was an astounding display of skill from Grasso, who became the third Mexican fighter to claim championship gold this year. This match was indeed a “wow” moment for UFC fans.

Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane

The UFC 285 event witnessed back-to-back stunners, with Grasso securing an impressive win in the co-main event, followed by Jon Jones’ return to the octagon in the main event. After a long hiatus, Jones made a triumphant comeback, clinching a first-round victory against heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane.

The 35-year-old took Gane down just a little over a minute into the match, and the French heavyweight was unable to regain his footing.  Jones then moved to a mounted position and attempted a guillotine choke, with Gane managing to fend off the first attack.

However, Jones pressed on with a second attempt, quickly prompting Game to tap out. It was a remarkable display of dominance from Jones, who continues to be one of the most exceptional talents in UFC history.

Yair Rodriguez vs Josh Emmett

This was Yair’s biggest moment yet, and he rose to the occasion with a performance that left us all in awe. In the second round against his American contender, Emmett, Rodriguez was picking his spots with precision and unloading some heavy blows.

And then, out of nowhere, he launched a flying knee that sent Vaseline flying off Emmett’s head. Now, some fighters might have been content with just landing such a spectacular strike, but not Rodriguez. He used the momentum to set up a triangle choke, trapping Emmett and forcing him to tap out.
