White had clarified about putting a separate title other than the UFC championship in BMF only for once when Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz cashed at UFC 244. WWE star Dwayne Johnson was roped in to present the title to the winner.
While Masvidal grabbed the belt via stoppage victory, now Dustin Poirier or Justin Gaethje can be his BMF successor in the UFC. In a recent announcement, Dana White clarified his take on the UFC 291 main-event and revealed why Jorge Masvidal’s BMF belt will be on the line once again.
The UFC President said, “Since Jorge Masvidal retired, the BMF title is back up for grabs. The main event will be five rounds between the number two and number three lightweights in the world.”
“Former champion Dustin Poirier takes on another former champion Justin Gaethje for the vacant BMF title between two of the baddest dudes in the game.”
Dustin Poirier knocked out Justin Gaethje when they clashed for the first time in 2018. Five years later, they will headline a UFC PPV with an interesting tile on the line. This indicates that the BMF title may not go away from the UFC sphere. Following the UFC 291, fans can expect more of the BMF title in use and the winner of the title can call for a defense.
Jorge Masvidal never defended his BMF belt after winning it against Nate Diaz. However, now that the title is brought back, the UFC can have different plans for it. Meanwhile, Dana White has introduced several more high-profile fights for the UFC 291 card. Former middleweight champion Alex Pereira will make his 205 lbs debut against Jan Blachowicz in the co-main event. Middleweight star Paulo Costa will also appear on the card.
