Comparing something like this in MMA is a very subjective topic. It is difficult to measure any skill. Moreover, in MMA, an effective wrestler can be one who gets submissions easily and also one who can get takedowns to aid their ground and pound. However, to facilitate a fair comparison, in this case, we will only compare their wrestling stats.
When we look at Amanda Nunes’ grappling numbers, the Brazilian gets 2.6 takedowns per fifteen minutes at 56% accuracy. These are respectable numbers, but not the best in the world. Aldana, on the other hand, gets a mere 0.2 takedowns per fifteen minutes at 50% accuracy.
However, both fighters have excellent takedown defenses. Nunes stuffs 82% of takedowns attempted on her while Aldana stuffs 81% of her opponent’s takedowns. Therefore, in this aspect, they are fairly even. However, the Brazilian has a better submission average of 0.79 compared to Aldana’s 0.3.
So there you have it. Irene Aldana is not a better wrestler than Amanda Nunes. However, this is only on paper. We have seen other Mexican champions like Brandon Moreno and Alexa Grasso prove doubters wrong. Aldana will be hoping to do the same.
