Jon Jones was set to make his first championship defense against ‘Rampage’ Jackson, another MMA great, only months after he defeated Shogun Rua to become the UFC’s youngest champion. Jon Jones crawled towards Jackson as the bout began because he kept experiencing nightmares that he would be knocked out inside the first 30 seconds of the battle.

“Before fighting Rampage Jackson, I kept getting these nightmares that I would be knocked out and that no matter how the fight went, it would happen inside the first 30 seconds. He ran at me in three different dream scenarios, landing an overhand right, a right uppercut, and a left hook. I was going to get knocked out eventually, and I couldn’t escape it,” Jones said on Steve-Wild O’s Ride.

“I thought I was going to get knocked out on fight night. Therefore, I prayed profoundly and touched every body part, from head to toe. I looked in the mirror as I was feeling myself and praying and saw that I was covered in white feathers. To me, it appeared as though there were tiny feathers between my fingers and that they extended up to my neck. I had the impression that I was a supernatural force in battle.”

“Through my trek to the cage, I could cling to this sensation and this false sense of self. I thought I was entering the Rampage Jackson battle for the first time as the featherman. The only thing that hadn’t occurred in my nightmares was my plan to crawl and approach him because every fight begins with a fight.”

“Something just said, ‘Go on your knees and crawl up to him,’ Then the dream vanishes with the image of him putting you to sleep right away. I did that, allowing me to battle in a potent alter-ego condition.”
