Such comparisons keep sports and its stars exciting and interesting. However, it’s unusual when a UFC fighter is compared to a cricketer, as cricket is considered a gentleman’s game while MMA is viewed as a violent sport. Nonetheless, Indian UFC panelist Arjun Chipalkatti drew an interesting comparison between Alex Pereira and cricket legend Vivian Richards.

With only two days remaining until UFC 291, the battle between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier for the BMF belt is on everyone’s minds. However, the co-main event between Alex Pereira and Jan Blachowicz is just as exciting, if not more so. During an interview with InsideSport, Chipalkatti was asked about Pereira’s light heavyweight debut. He made an intriguing comparison, stating that Pereira is as intimidating as cricket legend Vivian Richards.
Talking about the debut he stated, “The size of Alex Pereira, I saw him at the airport, I’m 6 ‘3, 250lbs I’m not a small guy. And I saw Alex Pereira and you know, he is thick, it’s like Prime Vivian Richards. You know he is like old West Indian Bowlers- solid guys. You get scared when you look at Pereira. He is huge. And it is shocking to think how he made it to 185lbs that man is easily walking around 230 lbs and 205 is his division. I can’t wait to see him.”
For those unfamiliar with cricket or who don’t know Vivian Richards, he was a legendary West Indian batsman who would dominate his opponents with ease. When he walked up to bat, the opponents would fall silent due to the fear he instilled in them. Chipalkatti believes that Pereira possesses the same kind of energy and intimidation that the West Indian legend had in his prime, likening his presence to that of Richards.
Chipalkatti’s point about Pereira’s intimidating presence is certainly valid, as the fighter is not someone you can easily overlook. The only exception to this may be Israel Adesanya, who recently defeated Pereira at Middleweight. However, as Chipalkatti noted, Pereira’s true potential may lie in the 205 lbs division. It remains to be seen what the fighter will do in this weight class, but it will undoubtedly be interesting to watch.
