Paddy Pimblett: UFC 296 Showdown with Ex-Champ Tony Ferguson Termed a 'Lose-Lose' Fight- Here’s Why.

At UFC 296, the main event will feature a welterweight championship fight between champion Leon Edwards and challenger Colby Covington. Additionally, the co-main event will feature a flyweight title bout between Alexandre Pantoja and Brandon Royval. However, one of the fights that has fans buzzing is Tony Ferguson’s showdown with Paddy Pimblett.

Fight enthusiasts are eager to witness whether former UFC champ Ferguson, who is currently on a significant losing streak, can make a comeback. Talking about this matchup, the British fighter labels it as a lose-lose situation for him. Let’s explore the reasons behind his statement.

Why Did Paddy Pimblett Label Fight With Tony Ferguson as a “Lose-Lose” Fight?

Paddy Pimblett has an undefeated record in the UFC, but his closely contested decision win over Jared Gordon in December garnered criticism. Following that, he has been sidelined due to injury. In contrast, Tony Ferguson is currently grappling with a six-fight losing streak, with his most recent defeat coming at the hands of Bobby Green.

With the former champ on a prolonged losing streak, Pimblett believes that securing a victory against him won’t significantly advance his position, given Ferguson’s recent struggles. Moreover, he fears that a loss to Ferguson would attract substantial criticism.

Talking with Sky Sports he stated, “This fight is a lose-lose situation for me… When I win they’ll be like, ‘Oh, he was on a six-fight losing streak anyway, he’s finished anyway,’ and I don’t think it’s gonna happen but even if I did lose they’ll be like, ‘Oh, he’s just been beat by a finished Tony Ferguson.’ Tony Ferguson is Tony Ferguson.

Certainly, Pimblett is right given Ferguson, once regarded as a baddest superstar in his prime, is currently on a losing streak. While a win against him would contribute to Pimblett’s record, the impact may be minimal given Ferguson’s recent struggles.

Pimblett appears to believe that Ferguson’s recent performances have somewhat tarnished his legacy, and a victory over him at this point might not carry the same weight as it would have during Ferguson’s prime.
