The first round started with Poirier and Gaethje on two different strategies. However, both fighters stood their ground, met in the center of the ring, and fought fire with fire. Gaethje looked to take away Poirier’s legs with incredible inside kicks to Poirier’s lead leg. However, Dustin Poirier took the opportunity to counter and hurt Gaethje.
While both Poirier and Gaethje had their fair share of significant strikes, Poirier won the first round. More of the same followed in the second. However, this time, Gaethje mixed it up with more strikes to the head. As a result, Poirier attempted the first takedown of the fight in the second round. And despite getting a warning for an eye-poke, Gaethje got the second round thanks to a last-minute barrage.
The third round provided even more entertainment. Both fighters continued to put pressure and refuse to back away. Gaethje hurt Poirier at one stage and had him back up. However, a second eye-poke from Gaethje resulted in a point deduction. Despite this, Gaethje landed better strikes and enjoyed more success.
Finally, after three incredible rounds, the fourth round brought about the knockout. Gaethje rushed into range and Poirier landed a perfect counter-left straight to the chin. This wobbled Gaethje. And Poirier saw his opportunity and finished the fight with a barrage of shots.
