When did Max Holloway become UFC Champion?

Many consider Max Holloway a legend in the sport. And his title run and reign are the main reasons for this. Holloway had a difficult start to his UFC career. The Hawaiian lost three of his first six fights. However, two of these came against Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

After his defeat to McGregor, Holloway went on a 13-fight winning streak, including his title wins. After nine wins in a row against the likes of Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, and Jeremy Stephens, Holloway earned an interim featherweight title shot against Anthony Pettis.

Holloway showed his class and knocked out Anthony Pettis to become the interim champion. He then faced Jose Aldo for the undisputed title and knocked out the Brazilian to cement himself at the top of the division. The two then fought in a rematch, and Holloway proved his worth by beating Aldo again to retain the undisputed crown.

The Hawaiian then defended his belt against Brian Ortega in one of the UFC’s classic featherweight contests. Such was Holloway’s dominance in the division, he then moved up to lightweight and challenged Dustin Poirier for the lightweight interim title. However, he lost to the American.

Despite this, Holloway came back to the featherweight division and defended his featherweight belt against former champion Frankie Edgar and cemented his place at the top. However, this would be his last title win as Holloway then lost the belt to Alexander Volkanovski.

So ultimately Max Holloway held the UFC featherweight title for 959 days between December 2016 and July 2019.

What do you make of Max Holloway’s reign as UFC champion? Do you think he is one of the best featherweights in the promotion’s history?
