Makhachev is the lightweight champion and holds the belt that Conor McGregor once held. Moreover, the Russian is McGregor’s arch-nemesis, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s prodigy, and trains under ‘The Eagle.’ Therefore, it is no surprise that McGregor and Makhachev are not the best of friends.

Conor McGregor accuses Islam Makhachev of substance abuse

McGregor posted on X, in a now-deleted post, and said, “Ko’d unconscious and caught on steroids. MMA’s current p4p no1. What a sport.” The laughing emoji at the end captured the sarcastic tone of the post. He also posted accompanied this with a picture of Makhachev’s knockout loss and an article about the Russian’s steroid abuse.

Clearly, McGregor does not agree with the P4P rankings in the UFC. The Irishman has always claimed to be number one. And with this comment, he believes Makhachev should not be number one because of these two reasons.

Makhachev’s knockout loss came at the hands of Adriano Martins back in 2015. The Brazilian landed a perfect counter, which knocked the Russian out and the referee called it off. And a year later, Makhachev faced some time out of the sport when officials discovered traces of Meldonium.

Meldonium is a banned substance because it modulates the metabolic functions of the body. It improves muscle recovery by increasing the flow of oxygen to the affected areas. This was the same drug that Tennis star Maria Sharapova tested positive for. Makhachev was also part of that scandal among Russian athletes.

So there you have it. McGregor believes Makhachev should not be number one for these reasons. What do you make of these claims and who do you think should be the UFC P4P number one?
