It’s no secret that Justin Gaethje wants to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight crown, but if it doesn’t work out, the current BMF champion may be saving his best fight for another opportunity.

Max Holloway, the former featherweight champion of the UFC, seems to be interested in challenging Gaethje for the BMF belt based on comments he made on X, the previous Twitter platform, on Thursday.

Gaethje made that remark after telling ESPN’s Marc Raimondi that he would wait however long it takes to face Makhachev for the lightweight title in the UFC.

Justin Gaethje Waiting To Crack On Islam Makhachev

If ‘The Highlight’ prevails in 2022, Justin Gaethje has declared that he will give Islam Makhachev the opportunity to win the UFC championship gold first.

The UFC lightweight, rated No. 2, expressed his excitement to MMA Fighting about a possible matchup with Makhachev.

Justin Gaethje has been acting more and more hostilely against Islam Makhachev in recent weeks. Following Makhachev’s victory against Dan Hooker at UFC 267, Daniel Cormier was notified by ‘The Highlight’ that the Russian should not go on to defend the title.

Makhachev was supposed to face Charles Oliveira, the former lightweight champion of the UFC, at UFC 294 this past weekend. However, 12 days prior to the fight, Oliveira cut himself and had to pull out. On short notice, Alexander Volkanovski stepped in, and Makhachev promptly kicked him in the head to end the fight.

Dana White, CEO of the UFC, stated during the press conference following the bout that Oliveira is still most likely Makhachev’s next opponent. That battle would probably need to take place prior to Makhachev starting the Ramadan celebrations on March 10, 2024. Gaethje stated he would be prepared to hold off on competing until Makhachev gets the championship shot if Makhachev prevails in that match and sticks to his custom of not fighting until the fall.

Makhachev is the top lightweight in the world according to ESPN, followed by Oliveira at No. 2 and Gaethje at No. 3.
