According to Conor McGregor, Islam Makhachev was fortunate to escape punishment for breaking the law when he knocked out Australian Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294.

During their Sunday morning blockbuster in Abu Dhabi, the lightweight champion decisively put an end to the rivalry and Volkanovski’s dreams of ever being a two-division champion with a resounding high leg kick.

The battle lasted only three minutes before the referee stepped in to save Volkanovski after he had fallen to the ground on the Octagon’s side.

Now, it has been discovered that the ground-and-pound punches used to kill Volkanovski were actually unlawful blows to the 35-year-old man’s back of the head.

McGregor, who has subsequently erased the charge levelled against Makhachev, was the first to raise attention to the unlawful act.

Following the loss, Volkanovski, who had two weeks’ notice before the bout, did not mention the illegal strikes and was only polite to the man who had now defeated him twice this year.

A fantastic set-up, he remarked inside the Octagon. A powerful kick. It’s challenging; I detest losing. I’m hurt by it.

Following the bout, Volkanovski spoke with genuine sportsmanship and opened up to the world in a moving news conference.

He disclosed confidential information about his struggles with his mental health and the need for him to enter the fight for those reasons.
