The two sides locked horns from the very first minute of the game, leaving not a quarter of an inch for their opponent. With each team enjoying small spells of possession and attacks, none were able to create a fine opening to score in the first half. England upped their tempo midway through the second half to find the opener but failed to test Donnarumma.
Both sides were locked in the midfield battle as each wanted to dominate the other. Though both sides got their fair share of chances, none could outdo the other to test the respective goalies. Eventually, the first half came to an end with the score remaining goalless.

In the second half, much like the first half, the two sides huffed and puffed to dominate the possession. Past the hour mark, it was Roberto Mancini who decided to play his cards and brought on Gnonto and Pobega. With fresh legs on the pitch, the Azzurri began to dominate proceedings.
The only goal from the match came at the 68th-minute mark. Italy skipper Leonardo decided to play a long ball to Giacomo Raspadori from the backline. The 22-year-old forward dummies Eric Dier with his first touch and baffled Kyle Walker with a turn to send the England side back the wrong way. With his path clear, Raspadori unleashed a fireball that smashed the net to erupt the Azzurri fans.
Gareth Southgate went on to make immediate changes which saw England piling huge pressure on Italy. Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off a stunning double back-to-back saves from Harry Kane’s efforts to keep Italy at bay. Amidst all the efforts made by the English side, they failed to breach the Italian wall and thereby has been subsequently demoted to the Lower league.
