Tokyo Paralympics: Devendra Jhajharia bags SILVER, Sundar Singh Gurjar claims bronze in javelin throw- India’s Devendra Jhajharia has won Silver medal while Sundar Singh Gurjar has claimed bronze in men’s javelin throw as Day 6 continues to reap rewards for India at Tokyo Paralympics.
Devendra Jhajharia grabbed silver with a personal best throw of 64.35. This was also his third medal at Paralympic Games. Meanwhile, Sundar captured bronze with a season-best throw of 62.58. Dinesh Priyan Herath Mudiyanselage of Sri Lanka bagged gold in a very comprehensive manner by shattering the World Record with his monstrous throw of 67.79m. Notably, Cuba’s Varona Gonzalez also clinched the continental record.
Sundar went first among the Indian trio in the final as he started with a season-best of 62.58. Devandra had 60.28 while Ajeet had 56.15 on the first attempt.
Devendra did 60.62 in his second attempt before he went past his previous world record once again in the third attempt with a throw of 64.35. But the Sri Lankan athlete Dinesh Priyan Herath Mudiyanselage had completely other plans as he broke the World Record with a sensational 67.79 in his third attempt, improving the previous record by almost four meters.
Sundar Singh was shown a red flag in his 3rd and 4th attempts, after which he landed a 64.01 for his season-best in the 5th throw to land himself in a medal position. Meanwhile, Ajeet wasn’t able to better his first attempt during the whole final as he registered four invalid attempts and a 52.36 in his last throw.
Devendra threw 61.23 in his last attempt while Sundar’s last attempt was invalid.
“I want to thank every citizen of the country who prayed for me. My aim was for gold but in sports, there are ups and downs. But it’s good that I have registered a hat-trick of medals for India. I am extremely happy,” an emotional Jhajharia told ANI.
In 2016, with his gigantic 63.97m throw, Devendra Jhajharia stamped his authority at Rio Paralympics to bag his second gold medal in the Paralympics. His first came in 2004 Athens but since then, he had to wait for another medal for a long time. While many believed the Indian Paralympic legend will call it quits, Jhajharia was determined for more.

Tokyo Paralympics Live: Devendra Jhajharia eyes historic 3rd Gold: At age 8 when his left hand had to be amputated having come in contact with a high-power electric wire, a normal life seemed a far-fetched idea. But he didn’t lose hope. He worked hard and wait to turn his life around. He did so in Athens 2004 winning the gold medal. Then he had to pull out of 2008 Paralympics due to a shoulder injury. Set for a comeback, Devendra Jhajharia suffered a shoulder injury while training in Finland ahead of the Rio Paralympics. But it could not stop him from shattering his own World Record and win his second Gold medal.
This time, age is not on his side but his will is. He will be up against his two own countrymen who have followed his footsteps and are strong contenders but Jhajharia isn’t going to go down easily. He believes he can still win the gold medal in F46 classification.

“I am training hard and following a well-thought-out programme set by my personal coach Sunil Tanwar. I am confident that just like in Athens and Rio, I will win a gold medal in Tokyo too,” Jhajharia told Paralympic.org.

The two have watched him closely and will look to trump him at his own game. But the special one to watch out for will be Ajeet Singh.
