Novak Djokovic to miss Australian Open 2024? Serbian star plagued by wrist injury

Djokovic is the defending Australian Open champion.

An injury scare stands between Novak Djokovic and the record-extending 11th Australian Open title. Playing against the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka in the United Cup, the 24-time Grand Slam champ has potentially suffered an injury that can threaten his chances to win his 11th Australian Open and 25th Grand Slam title.

Although Djokovic won the match in three sets, he called the trainer during the first set. Djokovic had some work done by the trainer on his wrist and claimed the first set 6-1. However, the second set was taken by Lehecka, who sensed an opportunity while Djokovic had injury doubts on his mind.

Closing the match, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, Novak Djokovic stated that his wrist was sore and he was trying to work around it.

“But I managed to play it through, and it’s not the first or the last time. These things happen. You just have to manage and find a solution. Let’s see what happens now.” He said this in the post-match on-court interview.

Will Novak Djokovic’s chance to win the Australian Open 2024 take a hit?

New footage of Novak Djokovic has revealed that the star player was having issues with his wrist before the match but decided to play despite the issues. However, this decision might come to haunt him if the defending Australian Open champion is unable to contend for the title.

At 36 years old, Djokovic is one of the most experienced campaigners in the game and knows how to handle his body. During the 2021 Australian Open, he won the title despite suffering an abdominal tear during his round-of-32 match against Taylor Fritz.
