Former India wrestler Vinesh Phogat shared delightful news with her fans on social media on March 6, announcing that she is expecting her first child with husband Somvir Rathee. The former wrestler posted a picture with her husband, captioning it, “Our love story continues with a new chapter.” Soon after, fans and well-wishers flooded the comments with congratulatory messages, including fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, who extended their best wishes to the couple.
Many people may not know that Vinesh’s husband, Somvir Rathee, is also a national-level wrestler from Haryana. The couple first met while working for the Indian Railways in 2011 and began dating. They got married in December 2018 in a small, intimate ceremony in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana.
Paris Olympics heartbreak
It was no secret that Vinesh Phogat experienced a heartbreaking moment at the Paris Olympics 2024 when she was disqualified just hours before the women’s 50kg wrestling final due to being overweight. Despite achieving a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final, Phogat failed to make weight for her gold medal bout against Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA.
Following the controversy, the Indian Olympic Association appealed her disqualification, but the appeal was rejected. A petition for a joint silver medal was also dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
