Karen Khachanov vs Constant Lestienne
Khachanov rallied from two sets down to eliminate home favourite Constant Lestienne 3-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The 11th-seeded Khachanov has reached back-to-back major semi-finals and kept alive his hopes of another deep run after three hours and 41 minutes.
Khachanov will next face Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot, who beat American wild card Patrick Kypson 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Khachanov and Albot will meet for the first time in the second round.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jiri Vesely
Stefanos Tsitsipas passed a stern first-round test on Sunday at Roland Garros, where the fifth seed overcame Jiri Vesely 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(7) at the clay-court major.
The fifth seed appeared set for a routine victory on Court Philippe Chatrier after claiming the first two sets but Vesely, playing in his first tour-level tournament since the US Open last September, battled hard.
The Czech sealed the third set with a late break of his opponent’s serve and led 6/3 and 7/6 in the fourth-set tie-break, but Tsitsipas kept his cool to dig out a three-hour, 13-minute victory.
Andrey Rublev vs Laslo Djere
Seventh seed Andrey Rublev made a good start on Sunday when he defeated Laslo Djere 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round. The 25-year-old hit 37 winners to move on after two hours and 32 minutes.
Rublev appeared in difficulty when Djere moved ahead by a service break in the third set, level at one set apiece. But the 13-time ATP Tour titlist buckled down from there to avoid a second first-round exit at the clay-court major in three years.
Women’s Singles
Aryna Sabalenka vs Marta Kostyuk
No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka got her Roland Garros campaign off to a winning start, coming from an early break down to defeat Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
This result extends Sabalenka’s 2023 record to 30-5. She has reached at least the quarterfinals at seven of the eight tournaments she has contested prior to Roland Garros, and the final at five of them.
Sabalenka will next face qualifier Iryna Shymanovich, who celebrated her Grand Slam main-draw debut with a 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1 win over Panna Udvardy.
Maria Sakkari vs Karolina Muchova
Karolina Muchova knocked out a Top 10 player on Day 1 of Roland Garros, as the Czech defeated No.8 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 7-6(5), 7-5 on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Sakkari was toppled this time around in 2 hours and 6 minutes, becoming the first Top 10 player to fall this fortnight.
Former Top 20 player Muchova, currently ranked No.43, defeated Sakkari at the French Open for the second straight year, by a nearly identical scoreline. Muchova also upset Sakkari in the second round last year in two tiebreak sets, and she now leads their overall head-to-head 3-1.
