Swiss Open Badminton: The European leg of the BWF Tour is set to continue for the third successive week. After the All England Championships, the focus will shift to the Swiss Open. The Super 300 event is scheduled to begin on 21st March 2023, Tuesday. The tournament will feature big names like World No.1 Viktor Axelsen, Lee Zii Jia, Chou Tien Chen in Men’s Singles. World No.6 Wang Zhiyi and Carolina Marin headline action in Women’s singles. Indians in action
Men’s Singles
HS Prannoy who was last year’s finalist in the Swiss Open is the fifth seed in this year’s edition. The World No.9, is placed in the first quarter of the draws. He will begin his campaign by facing China’s Shi Yuqi in the first round.
Anders Anton, who made it to the semifinals in the All England Championships is likely to face Prannoy in the second round. Antonsen will face Kantaphon Wangchaoren in the opening round. Meanwhile, World No.1 Viktor Axelsen os also in the quarter.
Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth are in the same quarter. Both the Indians are placed in the third quarter and are likely to meet in the second round.
Lakshya Sen, who is the eighth seed will face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu. Meanwhile, Srikanth will be up against China’s Weng Hongyang in the first round. Apart from Lakshya, the other seeded player in this quarter is fourth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Women’s Singles
PV Sindhu enters the tournament as the defending champion. Sindhu, who has endured poor form in the tour so far is looking for turnaround of fortunes. She is the fourth seed and is present in the third quarter of the draws. She will face Switzerland’s Jenjira Stadelmann in the first round.
Meanwhile, Saina Nehwal is also present in the same quarter and she is likely to meet Sindhu in the second round. Nehwal will face Thailand’s Lalinrat Chaiwan in the first round.
Men’s Doubles
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are the second seed in the Men’s Doubles. They enter the tournament following their second round defeat at the All England Badminton Championships.
They are placed in the fourth quarter of the draws. The second-seeded pair will face qualifiers in the first round. Indoneia’s Leo Carnando and Daniel Marthin are the only other seeded players in the quarter.
MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will be the second Indian pair in the tournament. They are in the top quarter and will kickstart their campaign by facing Japan’s Taichi Saito ad Akira Koga. If they win their first round, they are set to face top seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
Krishnaprasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will also be in action in the tournament. They will begin their campaign against sixth seeded Indonesian pair Muhammad Fikri and Bagas Maulana.
Women’s Doubles
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who made it to the semifinals at the All England Championships will look to continue their form in the Swiss Open. The unseeded duo will have a tough first round contest.
They will face second seeded Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Ramadhanti. The Indonesian pair enter the tournament after bowing out from the quarterfinals at the All England Championships.
Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam are the only other Women’s Doubles pair from India. They will begin their campaign by facing Thailand’s Supissara Paewsampran and Puttita Supajirakul.
