Fast-rising Indian men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila saw off brothers Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 16-21 21-17 21-12 to enter the pre-quarterfinals.
The Scot Brothers started the match with a lead. They entered the mid-game interval in the first game with a 11-6 lead. They continued to dominate and won the game 21-16.
The Indian pair made a good comeback in the second game. They were ahead right from the start and entered the interval with a five-point lead. They didn’t let their opponents comeback in the contest and went on to take the contest into the decider by winning the second game 21-17.
In the third game, both the players were in a neck-to-neck battle. The Indian pair managed to enter the interval with a one-point lead. After the interval they slowly managed to take lead. At 15-12 the Indian pair took control and unleashed their attacking game. They raced away with six successive points and closed out the contest.
Women’s Doubles
Ashwini Bhat/Shikha Gautam vs Margot Lambert/Anne Tran
Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam suffered their sixth successive first round defeat at the BWF Tour this year. Against France’s Margot Lambert and Anne Tran, they began the contest by trailing in the first game. They trailed 7-11 by the mid-game interval. They managed just four more points and lost the first game 11-21.
In the second game, the Indian pair fought back well and at one stage they were leading 13-10. They couldn’t hold on to the lead. Four successive points from the French pair helped them make a comeback from 11-14 to 15-14. The Indian duo managed to level the contest 19-19 and a neck-to-neck battle ensued. However, trailing 22-23, Shikha Gautam failed to collect a return and the Indian duo lost the contest in straight games.
Sikki Reddy/Arathi Sunil vs Annie Xu/Kerry Xu
India’s Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sunil made it to the second round at the Madrid Masters 2023. The Indian pair faced a good fight from the Americans at the start. It was a neck-to-neck battle right from the start. The Xu sisters managed to enter the interval with a slender one-point lead in the first game.
After the break, from 13-13, the American duo dominated with five successive points and raced to a 18-13 lead. The Indian pair couldn;t reduce the deficit and lost the game 16-21.
In the second round too, the American duo started with a 11-8 lead by the mid-game interval. However the Indians managed to make a terrific comeback after the interval. From 8-11, they took six successive points and took 14-11 lead. They managed to cling on to the lead and a service error from the Americans helped the Indian pair win the second game 21-18.
In the third round, the Indian pair yet again took lead and entered the interval with a 11-5 lead. It became a one-sided contest as the Indians went on to seal victory by winning the third set 21-11.
