Earlier, Scotland captain Richie Berrington won the toss and opted to bat first against Ireland. Scotland put on their best-ever total thanks to a record-breaking innings from Michael Jones at the top of the order. Jones scored a fine 86, the highest by a Scottish player in T20 World Cup to guide his team to a competitive 176. Berrington’s side had a slow start before the captain himself took the onus to up the ante and get the runs ticking over. For Ireland, Curtis Campher and Mark Adair bowled brilliantly to keep Scotland within reach.
Ireland’s chase got off to the worst possible start with Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling both losing their wickets in the powerplay. Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector rebuilt the innings in what seemed a promising stand, but both were dismissed in a quick span of time as Ireland were reeling at 61/4.
The win predictor suggested Scotland had a 93% of winning the game, but Curtis Campher had other ideas. Alongside George Dockrell, the Irish all-rounder kept the runs flowing with timely boundaries. Campher eventually reached his maiden T20I fifty, and managed Ireland’s highest score ever at the T20 World Cup. The duo reduced the equation to 12 from 12, before sealing the chase with an over to spare.
