Barcelona won the La Liga title after 4 years as they won the match against Real Sociedad on May 14th. After the win, Robert Lewandowski gave an interview with GOAL Poland. He joined Barcelona last year and since then, he has won two trophies with them. He is also leading the race for the Pichichi Award. In the exclusive interview, he talked about how Barcelona fans thank him on the streets, how he formed friends in the dressing room, how facing Bayern Munich was hardest for him, and more.

Love from fans:

When he was asked if celebrating the Championship at Barcelona was different from his previous clubs, he said, “It’s actually different. In Dortmund and Bayern it was very static – in the square with the fans. Here, a ride in an open-top coach. You could see how this city lives our success. Thousands of fans with emotions written on their faces was a picture that hit me very hard. I think that’s when I understood what the title means to them. How many people have we given a little happiness.”

The player also said that people come up to him on the streets many times. He sometimes wears glasses and hats to avoid it. However, he still said that it’s nice when people come up to him to thank him. He said he receives such love “Probably mainly because I came in [Barcelona] difficult circumstances.” He added, “I took Barcelona as a challenge and the support and love I got here from day one reassured me that I made the right move.”

Making friends:

As Lewandowski came from Germany, he only could communicate in English which helped him make fast friends with English-speaking players, like Frenkie de Jong, Marc Andre Ter Stegen, and Andreas Christiansen. However, he is learning Spanish slowly. He said, “Over time, when I learned Spanish, I made better and better contacts with others – with Gavi, Pedri Raphinia, Dembele, Araujo. Or with Sergi Busquets, with whom I meet at school, because often when I drop off the children, we have the opportunity to exchange a word.”

Taking responsibility:

Coach Xavi has recently said that Lewandowski is a captain without an armband at the club. Responding to that, Lewandowski said, “From day one I was aware that my role would go beyond the pitch and that if I didn’t score a few goals nothing would happen.” He said when he was going through a goal drought, the club told him they see his hard work and his influence on others mattered more than goals. He added, “This too – being just such an informal captain – was something new for me and in a way a challenge. I think I managed.”

Hardest moment this season:

Lewandowski said facing his former club was the hardest moment for him this season. He said, “Bayern was not a football match for me. It was a very strong emotional trip. I couldn’t emotionally get over it. Today it would probably be different, but I can admit that I wasn’t able to overcome it then. No matter what I did, the emotions hit me too hard. You can’t just walk past the fact that I’ve just broken records at this club and suddenly I’m playing against. It was a challenge I couldn’t overcome.”
