After being disqualified from the Asian Indoor Championships 2024 in the 3,000m event for lane violations, Gulveer Singh made amends in the 10,000m division less than a month later. On Sunday, the 25-year-old broke a 16-year-old national record with a timing of 27:41.81, placing him second in his heat at The Ten meet in San Juan Capistrano, California.
The bronze medallist at the Asian Games beat the previous national record of 28:02.89, set by Surendra Singh in 2008, by more than 20 seconds. As a result, Gulveer is currently the only Indian to have finished the 10,000 meters in under 28 minutes.
Sadly, despite Gulveer’s incredible performance, he was unable to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris as he was approximately 41 seconds over the cutoff time of 27:00.00.
Alongside Surendra, the other Indian competitor in the 10,000m heat was Kartik Kumar, who finished in ninth place with a timing of 28:01.90.
Star steeplechaser Avinash Sable entered the competition as well, but he withdrew from it in the fifteenth lap at the 6,000-meter mark after failing to finish his heat.
