ODI World Cup: Records that can be broken at the World Cup 2023

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mitchell Starc, among others, have a chance to be etched into cricket history at the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.

The ODI World Cup 2023 is less than a week away, and the teams are prepping for the biggest tournament in cricket. Ahead of the event starting on October 5, let’s take a look at records that can be broken at the World Cup 2023:

Most Centuries in ODI: Virat Kohli to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record

Coming into his fourth ODI World Cup, Virat Kohli has a chance to break his idol’s record of scoring the most centuries in ODIs. Kohli currently has 47 tons to his name, which is just two less than Tendulkar’s record of 49.

With a chance of playing a minimum of nine matches in the World Cup 2023, Kohli has a chance to make three tons and become the first player to score fifty ODI centuries.

Mitchell Starc: most wickets in ODI World Cup history

Mitchell Starc has been the highest wicket-taker in the last two World Cups (2015 and 2019). Such was his permanence in the 2015 edition that he was awarded as the ‘man of the series’.

Currently, Starc is the 5th highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup, with 49 wickets to his name. If the left-arm pacer can take 23 wickets, he can break Glenn McGrath’s record for most wickets (71 wickets).

Most wickets for India in the ODI World Cup

Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath hold the record for most wickets for India in the ODI World Cup. Coming into his third World Cup, Shami has 31 wickets in 11 matches, which is just 13 less than Zaheer and Srinath’s record of 44 wickets.

Most 100s in World Cup: Rohit Sharma looks to go past Sachin Tendulkar

The current Indian skipper is currently tied with the great Sachin Tendulkar, scoring 6 centuries each in the ODI World Cup.

Rohit has scored these 6 tons in just 17 innings compared to Tendulkar’s 44, and if he manages to score just one more century, he’ll hold the record.

Record for most sixes in international cricket

Rohit Sharma is not too far away from Chris Gayle in the most sixes on the international cricket list, with an incredible 551 sixes in 471 innings. The current Indian skipper needs just three more sixes to get past Gayle’s record of 553 sixes.

Shumban Gill: score the most runs in an ODI calendar year

Gill has 1230 runs in 20 innings in the 2023 calendar year. With a chance to bat in a minimum of 9 innings in the ODI World Cup 2023, the opener can break Sachin Tendulkar’s 25-year-old record.

Gill currently averages 72.35 in 2023, and if the right-hander scores 665 runs in the event, he will break Tendulkar’s record.
