Speaking between the matches at the World Tennis League exhibition event in Dubai, he was asked about his plans for 2023. He jokingly quipped, “Hopefully I can win a Slam and just retire.”

Reflecting on his season, he further added, “I had a lot of fun this season. I’m finally just proud to say that I made a Slam final and started living to the expectations but I had a lot of fun.”

Kyrgios is also aware that the more he performs well, expectations on him will make him more stressful. “It took a lot of hard work this season. A lot of discipline and it seems the better you do, everyone wants a bit more of you and it becomes more stressful.”

This is however not the first time, Kyrgios has spoken about his retirement. Earlier this year he defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev to reach the quarterfinals. Soon after the match he said, “Three more matches potentially… then we never have to play Tennis again,” he stated.

Kyrgios was ranked 93rd in the world in singles at the start of the year. But he climbed his way back to World No.20 in September. He started the year with second round exit at the Australian Open. He reached his first semifinals in ATP Houston in April and continued his momentum with back-to-back semifinals in Stuttgart Open and Halle Open.

He reached his career’s maiden Grand Slam final at the Wimbledon. He however finished as runner-up after losing the summit clash to Novak Djokovic. He won his maiden title in 2022 at the Citi Open. He bowed out from the quarterfinals at the US Open. His performances helped him finish the year at World No.22.

He also had a good run in the doubles, winning three titles that includes the Australian Open. He is currently the No.1 Australian in both the singles and doubles.
